Well, I'm back.

I got a Thrustmaster 1600M joystick for Christmas and immediately tried it out on XWAU. The drivers are installed, the PC seems to be detecting the controller just fine, and the device lights up (so it is clearly getting power) whenever I move the stick.

But unfortunately, whenever I fire up a mission, the game won't receive any input from the joystick. No movement, no weapons, nothing. I have tried with the default settings, tried importing a control scheme from the TFTC GitHub (https://github.com/edemirkan/tftc-joystick-resources), and tried manually configuring them. No dice on all fronts.

I read through several similar threads on these forums, and in a quick simulator mission I tried allowing a wave of TIE Fighters to kill me first, which resulted in an uncontrollable spin to the right upon respawn. I also tried switching the rudder option to 'off.' Still no solution here.

Any thoughts?

Rename or remove Hook_Joystick_Ff.dll and test using the in game Joystick options.

I would suggest you test the Joystick on a more modern game to make sure it's working correctly also.

If you can't even do the simple options of movement then it's not easy to fix.
I'm not a Joystick guy so that's all I can help you with myself.

No luck, alas. The commands reverted to the default mapping, but still no movement or firing or anything else.

Seems to work fine with Elite: Dangerous and Mechwarrior: Online. It's clearly getting power and being detected by the PC itself, and all drivers are up-to-date, so I'm reasonably certain this is a software issue, not hardware.

Dang it. It's been a solid decade+ since I've used a joystick, myself (probably since I originally played X-Wing Alliance, I'd wager). Is it just a case of hardware in 2021 not playing nice with software from 1999?

Don't have a joypad and a joystick plugged in at the same time.
Search Game Controllers in the search bar and make sure its setup via windows

I actually already tried this before posting on here. I had an Xbox One gamepad connected via BlueTooth, but I deleted it from the list under Game Controllers. Problem continued to occur.

Hmmm.

So I notice that the mouse controls still work (I had originally tried the mouse joystick emulation feature before acquiring the Thrustmaster). I deleted the .dll file mentioned above, but is there some way the emulator is still active and overriding input from the joystick?

Disable emulation in ddraw.cfg (if I remember correctly)

You can disable it in Babu Frik.
If all else fails make a copy folder and try Vanilla XWA

This worked! Huzzah! Much obliged, comrade.
