[HELP] Game Freezes Each Time I enter a mission Briefing

Windows 7.

Plenty of Gigs of space.

Downloaded X Wing Alliance from GOG

Then downloaded the XWAU Mega Patch 2020 into that same folder, as indicated.

Game starts fine; able to move around and enter training. But each time I go in for the briefing, the game freezes up. I have to use task manager just to get out of it.

Would love to play the game! Thank you for your help.

Please see this post: How to request help or post a bug and see if you can find any errors in the event viewer.

Game froze once again when entering the briefing. This error popped up:

"Direct 3D Texture Load
Unknown Error 0x887A0005"

This is my first time using the Event Viewer so I'm hoping this information is helpful. This is from the Application section and I've selected a few entries pre and post the "freezing" event:

3:35pm
The Software Protection service has completed licensing status check.

3:37pm
The Software Protection service has stopped.

I hope this information is useful thank you.

What are the specs of your computer?
PC or laptop?
Graphics Card?

Is Windows 7 totally up to date?
Sadly we are almost at the point where we can't guarantee on things being compatible with W7 anymore

Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Laptop Inspiron 5548
INtel Core i5-5200 processor at 2.20 GHz

INtel HD Graphics

Recently updated WIndows 7 a couple of days ago.

I'm wondering if indeed Windows is too old..

I am afraid your Intel HD Graphics might be the issue here. That's an integrated GPU and we've seen issues with those before. Maybe @JeremyaFr has an idea about the
"Direct 3D Texture Load
Unknown Error 0x887A0005"
error though.

Update 5 onwards just really hates laptop graphics cards now sadly

Yeah that was my concern from the get go. If any one has any more input, I 'd appreciate it; otherwise, Id better save for a new desktop!

Hello,
Does the error appear if you disable the Special Effects via Babu Frik's Configurator?

I will give that a try...
I ran X wing alliance yesterday just by itself (without XWAU). Happened once again but no errors this time. I didn’t think to check the Event thing; but it seems like it’s an X Wing alliance issue (downloaded from GoG) or my system. Just assuming here.

I had this same problem as well. When I would try going to the hanger, it would get so far in the loading and crash with a D3DTexture Load error: not enough memory. The problem was that the game was defaulting to my onboard intel GPU and would not use my Geforce RTX 2080 SUPER - there were no options in the game to changes this, only the Intel GPU selected and grayed out so I couldn't alter it. I followed all the suggestions on this forum, and elsewhere, of forcing the use of the graphics card through the Nvidia Settings, but I never got it to work. No matter what I did through the Nvidia Settings, it would never actually force the game to use the Nvidia GPU.

In frustration, I looked up how to generically force a program to use a specific GPU and found a solution! If you have Windows 10 (I think Windows 11 will be similar) you go to "start" and type "Graphics Settings". Then under "choose an app to set preferences" in the "desktop apps" drop-box, you click on "browse" and find the XwingAlliance.exe and add It (I was using the Steam version so it was in my steamapps folder). You then select "options" and click on "High Performance". This should cause the game to default to your better GPU. Doing this, the game now utilizes my RTX 2080 and I can play all the modded content with the fancy graphics and no crashes. So, do NOT go through the Nvidia/AMD settings, go through the Windows Graphics Settings instead.

If all you have is an integrated Intel GPU, you'll probably have to upgrade to play the newest patch or use JeremyaFr's most current ddraw_d3d version in the downloads section of this website. That is what I was using to play the game prior to figuring out how to force my better graphics card - graphics using JeremyaFr's ddraw aren't as nice (no bloom, SSAO, etc.) but at least it runs and you get the nice ship models.

That's a nice work around using Windows O/S. I"m not sure about laptops, but on some PC motherboards, you could go into your system BIOS before windows loads and disable the onboard GPU chip. And then designate the new video card you installed in your AGP/PCI-e slots or the newer tech interfaces. Then install your card's latest drivers and Window O/S updates.
