Hello there,
I am running the GOG version of X-Wing Alliance and have all the latest updates from the "upgrade-project" installed.
The game itself works like a charm. Graphics are amazing, though i have not fickled with them as i am running the game on a bit dated PC with a GeForce 750TI and Win7 x64.
I can start and play the first mission (cargo delivery) and again everything works just fine.
But when i get back to the azameen base, after completing the mission, i hit "space" to enter the hangar and then "go to debriefing".
However i never reach the debriefing - instead the screen feezes, while i keep hearing the music in the background.
After a while (maybe a minute or so) the game crashed without a message and i'm back on my desktop.

I tried looking up this issue for the vanilla version and the mod, but couldn't find anything (here or otherwise).
I have attached a compressed crash-dump in the link and HOPE that you can maybe help out a fellow pilot ^^

Hello,
You can try to use XwaHooksSetup to update all the hooks to the latest version and see if it still crashes.

Now i get an error message :kopfwand: i did something wrong with the hook-update ?!??
It says "you must set [hook_d4d] ISHookD3DEnabled = 0 in Hooks.ini to use the D3d renderer hook. The D3d renderer hook will be disabled."
I changed the required value to "0" but now the same happens again.
i finish the mission, hit "space" to enter the hangar, then try to "go to debriefing" and the game just crashed back to the desktop :hilfe:

if i don't change the value, the game doesn't even start up, but just crashes btw.

Have you been discussing this on Discord?
I have attached a file containing the latest Hooks and a CFG file which should make the game start all the time.

Issues can arise from playing old systems. We have almost reached the point where we just can not support Windows 7 anymore.
It's time to update the computer and the Graphics Card for sure!

It's worth mentioning we didn't intentionally break compatibility with Win 7. The latest Ddraw just isn't compatible fully with W7.
I think some shader instructions were implemented differently in Win 10 and since Win 7 is no longer supported, it never got the latest fixes.

This is what is needed to run things well on Windows 7 from information @JeremyaFr supplied.

The latest DLLs require .Net 4.8, C++ runtime for VS 2022, and Platform Update for Windows 7.
----------------------------------------
- Platform Update for Windows 7:
When installed on Windows 7, the Platform Update for Windows 7 updates Windows 7 with functionality available in Windows 8. For example, these Windows 8 components become available with full functionality: Direct2D 1.1 (including Direct2D Effects), DirectWrite, Windows Imaging Component (WIC)

- C++ runtime:
Visual Studio versions since Visual Studio 2015 share the same Redistributable files. For example, any apps built by the Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, or 2022 toolsets can use the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. However, the version of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed on the machine must be the same or higher than the version of the Visual C++ toolset used to create your application. Current versions of the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015-2022 only support Windows Vista, 7, 8.1, 10, and 11.

- .Net 4.8:
On Windows 7 systems, .NET Framework requires Windows 7 SP1. If you're on Windows 7 and haven't yet installed Service Pack 1, you need to do so before installing the .NET Framework

Hi, this is very similar to what I've been experiencing on Windows 7 64bit aswell, I've tried replacing all the DLLs and other files attached on Hooks.zip and installing .Net 4.8 but still have the issue, it does seem related to the .NET runtime on my Event Viewer it says:

Hi All
Also having the goto debriefing crash, on the mission to plant a spice container but cannot proceed any further.
Have a Win 7 system, updated the ddraw dll, framework, .net 4.8, etc etc, every 'fix' I have seen and still crash at goto debriefing.
Cannot get any further, it is either someone has a fix, or it is going in the bin.
Damn shame graphics lovely, sound issues fixed, joystick (finally) will now yaw and roll properly, but cannot play the game anymore.
Unless I play th same mission, over and over and over again.
Please help, you are my only hope.

FIXED!!
Well have managed to get mine working!!
Deleted the whole game and started again.
Here's what I noticed, my GOG installer was version 2.0.0.8 had no hardware video and sound kept stuttering and freezing, shipped with a patch to replace the XWA exe. file and enable the hardware video options (still suffered intermittant sound freezing - the background music).
Deleted this version and downloaded the newer version below.
These 2 files have now been replaced by a newer installer version 2.02 this needs no patching and fixed both issues.
Game now works fine (but no upgraded graphics and reconfigurable joystic axes).
So, fingers crossed reinstalled XWAU main file and the 2 patches v. 5 then v.5.5
Same error when testing......but different error messages referring to DINPUT.dll failing.

Looked into this and it is related to the older ddraw.dll.
So fingers crossed again, downloaded the new DDraw.dll in the downloads by JeremyaFr unzippped and replaced the ddraw and config files (as instructed in the readme).
Restarted, played the first mission, and...........it worked!!!!
Hope it works for you.

NOT FIXED!!! ;o(
Worked fine till the planting the spice mission, then...............crash again. If I get killed it restarts ok, if mission fails I can quit and restart ok, just cannot get to the de-briefing after completion.
Going to beat my head violently against for wall for inspiration.
Yes, I have the updated framework .net 4.8 sp1 update, C++ 2022 runtime, latest ddraw version, latest game version, latest patches (even patches on my knees, that didn't help either!)
My head hurts ;o(
ps. tried the hooks zip update above as well, no change.

It's a long shot but you could try adding the games executable to the DEP exception list. The exception code the game throws is an indicator that this could be the issue. (Sadly it's a long shot, but it's the best I have right now)
Here is a guide on how to do this:

Hello,
Can you attach a crash dump?

If you run XWA with the launcher and under "Advanced Options" select "Run XWA with Procdump", then when the game crashes it will generate a crash dump next in the XWA directory.

Hi JeremyaFr thanks for the help offer.
Running the game with procdump sometimes causes black screen and instant crash.
When it did run and allow me to get to the plant spice mission, yep same old crash again.
Will try to add the dmp file.
Thank you.

Invalid file extension.

Zipped it

Error file too large

Any idea?

Does this work? https://www.dropbox.com/s/1t8r5h6xymx8c ... e.zip?dl=0

What goto de-driefing looks like when I press space (opened task manager to access the snip tool).
