I remade some of the hit effects. I wanted them to be more pronounced and flashy. Especially when you strafe shieldless starships. Have a look:

So, I like the fire effect trailing the larger explosions but the explosions are (obviously) the same now, where as the procedural ones differ each time. it would be nice if these could be made procedural with variations.

I also like the unshielded hit explosions.

as for the "flash" this would be something better done within the effects engine so that related bloom and overall darkening(exposure) also happen at the same time (eg: a bright flash causes exposure to drop in compensation which dims other elements before exposure returns to normal).

Hi,
unfortunatly the explosions are set, because they are prerendered image-files. It would be cool if there would be a way to add more explosion animations randomly to each event. So i would make dozens of different explosions animations to get more variety.
For my showcase-videos i disabled the procedural explosion effect. But you can always enable it by yourself. Just change blend mode from 0 to 1 in all dat-200*.mat files in materials-folder.

The flash exposure is above my knowledge. i'm not a programmer, so i can't say how that can be achieved. Maybe @blue_max knows how this can be implemented.

In the meantime i updeted the explosion animation to be more colourful and better animated. They are more fiery now. Here is a short video showing it:
