Clearly my laptop is not capable of running this in all its glory. What are the biggest memory and resource hogs that could be bogging my system down so much, that I can toggle off in the configurator?

What are the specs of your laptop? The game may be old but with the recent visual upgrades the system requirements are close to those of contemporary games. Please see This FAQ entry for reference.

Integrated Radeon R5 graphics (5.1 pixel/vertex shaders, but apparently only 500 MB video RAM)
CPU: AMD A9-9425 RADEON R5, 5 COMPUTE CORES 2C+3G
8 GB RAM
It won't run Squadrons, or either Battlefront (although it will run the OLD Battlefront II with updated graphics, FWIW). It is what it is, because the last two gaming computers I bought failed within 6 months. And perhaps to save everyone's time, I don't have the expertise to build my own PC.
