OK here's the thing, ever wanted to take an epic screenshot of a ship? A big one? How would you do that?
One way: You position yourself to take the shot. This can be tedious and if you miss that sweet spot you have to go back and try again.
Then there is the Target camera (ALT+U)) where you can view and rotate your target to your heart's content.
Only problem is: The camera is usually too close and even zooming all the way out, the FoV will still make the image look stretched and too close.
HOWEVER: There is a sort-of bug or exploit which will enable you to use the target view at a greater distance by following a few simple steps:
1) Select your target, obviously.
2) Hit M to open the Map
3) Hit SPACE to switch map from 2D to 3D view. Your target should be now in focus
4) Use JOY-1 (fire button) to zoom all in as far as you can
5) Hit M again to close the map
6) Hit ALT+U to switch to target mode. The camera is now alot farther away from your target and you can slowly move the camera forward.
DO NOT zoom in until the ship fills the screen - due to the FoV it'll end up the same as before opening the map.
7) Instead: Use CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+Arrow Keys to adjust the Field of View which will zoom in your camera.
If you hit JOY-2 to zoom out, the camera will reset to default.
So what does this mean? See for yourself:
BEFORE: Using regular Target View
AFTER: Using Target View After opening the map
