Hello all, first timer here. I'm having an issue launching XWA outside of steam and could use some help please.
I recently picked up a copy of XWA on steam and then did the following:
While I had Steam open, I downloaded and installed the 2020 mega patch, then the v.5.0 and v.5.6.2. update patches. I then launched the game from the application file from the steam folder on my hard drive (d:) and it runs through steam.
With Steam closed I did the patch installs again. Now, when I double click it, the xwing launcher window does pop up, but with an error message saying 'XWingAlliance.exe not found'. In my d:/steam/steamapps/common/xwingalliance folder I have an 'alliance' application file (282 kb) that I assume is the .exe file to launch, it is simply not named alliance.exe in the folder.
Is a file just not where it should be? Or is there something to do with creating the shortcut?
I have viewed calmputer's installation video and looked at some other forums, but to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you tried to move the XWA folder away from Steam library and install XWAU mod there?
Steam may mess with the mod files and break it.

Yeah, do not install the mod with steam running and never run it through steam after you modded it.
If the xwingalliance.exe is not present in the games folder it could also be that your Anti-Virus solution messed with it. Try seeing if you can find any hints about that.

Thanks for the advice on moving the XWA folder away from Steam, I got the game to launch. New problem, when I start the game I get an error message about not detecting the game CD.
Help is again appreciated.

You need to make a fresh install with Steam. No mods, just XWA.
Run the game once to make sure it starts.
Copy the Steam XWA folder to a new games location away from Steam.
Uninstall XWA from Steam.
Then install XWAU to the new location and then you can run it from there.
Steam messes up installs.
